The History

Singapore is one of those places with an amazingly rich cultural tapestry. In order to understand the mix of cultures found here, you need to understand a little bit about Singapore’s history.

Singapore is a relatively young country. Prior to 1819, when the British settled a colony there, Singapore was ruled by a series of sultanates. The city was well situated for sea trade and so has been a port for much of its existence; this is still the case today. After the British statesman Stamford Raffles established the colony of Singapore in 1819, the small island nation took on a new importance. After the British East India Company collapsed, Singapore was seceded to the British Raj and became a crown colony.

During World War 2, Singapore was occupied by Imperial Japan. It remained under occupation until the end of the war, a situation which decimated the credibility of the British Empire as rulers. Ever since then, Singapore has embraced its own culture and developed its own identity. The nation was united with Malaysia but ultimately broke away to form an independent republic.

The Arts

Singapore is home to a great many works of art and public performers in the country are quite unlike any that you will see anywhere else. The Singapore Art Museum makes for a fantastic day out. Many public spaces in Singapore are decorated with murals and sculptures from local artists. If you want to make art a key component of your trip to Singapore, then January is probably the best time to visit the country, for it is during this month that the city hosts Singapore Art Week.

Singapore is a unique city-state that has a lot to offer travelers from around the world. If you get the opportunity to visit, then you shouldn’t pass it up!
