 | Farewell to Convair 580s in Alaska. |
zoom907 writes "Era Aviation plans to sell its entire fleet of Convair 580s between now and April 2003, according to Mike LeNorman, the carrier’s director of marketing. “We’re being regulated out of this aircraft,” bemoans LeNorman, who admits the roomy Convair is his favorite plane in the Era Aviation fleet. According to LeNorman, Era plans to replace the aging Convairs, which were built in the 1950s, with deHavilland Dash-8s, similar to those the carrier currently flies to the Alasakn communities of Kenai, Homer, Kodiak, Valdez, Iliamna and Cordova...
With its roomy interior and generous legroom, the 50-seat Convair is the aircraft of choice in Era’s system. The Convairs also are used on charters and along Alyeska Pipeline’s pump stations. “The loss of the Convair will effect the Pump Station crew change flights as well. We are working to ensure the switch over to different aircraft will be transparent,” said Milt Cross, aviation specialist with Alyeska Pipeline Service Co.
