Turkish Airlines finalizes order for 15 Boeing 737-800s

A Turkish Airlines order for 15 Boeing 737-800 passenger planes valued as high as $982.5 million has been finalized, the carrier and manufacturer announced Wednesday.

The deal is part of an expansion plan by the Middle East airline, Turkey’s flag carrier, Turkish Airlines president Abdurrahman Gundogdu said in a news release. The company’s fleet now includes 45 Boeing planes, include 26 other next-generation 737s.

“We are adding new destinations at the same time as we are seeing rapid growth in passenger traffic on our current routes,” Gundogdu said.

The airline’s decision to buy the single-aisle, twinjet 737-800s, along with 36 planes from rival Airbus SAS, was announced in July.

Turkey’s Anatolia news agency reported at the time that the agreement in principal set a price of about $1.5 billion for five Airbus A330-200s, 12 A321-200s and 19 A320-200s.

The Boeing planes carry a combined list price of $982.5 million, but airlines typically negotiate discounts, especially on multiple orders.
