On January 29, 1954, ground breaking ceremonies were held for the construction of a new SAC base at Plattsburgh, New York. To commemorate that 50th anniversary, Plattsburgh Online has published a digitized copy of the original souvenir program from that date in history.
Plattsburgh Air Force Base was a key facility throughout the Cold War, beginning with B-47s in the 1950′s, B-52′s in the 1960′s, FB-111′s in the 1970′s and ’80′s, and finally home to a refuelling mission of KC-135′s until its closure in 1995. PAFB was also designated as an emergency landing site for NASA‘s space shuttle program. In addition, in the 1960′s, a ring of Atlas ICBMs surrounded PAFB in a 50 mile radius.
